  Need the fulcrum?
Posted by: SHARPCO - 01-21-2018, 08:51 PM - Forum: BESS - Replies (6)

We can measure the sharpness of razorblade without a fulcrum. But for knives, we have to use the fulcrum. Why?

Rupert forwarded a number of excellent Charles Shultz Peanuts cartoons and this was one we picked out of the group. A good reminder for all who try to make their own and other's lives better through the sharing of ideas on social media platforms. Thank you to Rupert and to all BESSEX members for making the BESS Exchange a friendly place to visit.

  Over-Sharpening
Posted by: SteveG - 01-14-2018, 09:57 PM - Forum: Relevant General Discussion - Replies (35)

I've read a couple of times that continuing to sharpen past a certain optimal point reduces the sharpness of a blade.  This isn't something I've experienced with plane-blades or chisels, and my knife-sharpening skills are poor enough that I wouldn't notice (unless I measured a lot more often than I do).  Anyhow, it doesn't make sense to me, so I'm hoping somebody can explain why that would happen.  I can understand it if the sharpening is with a soft substrate, such as leather stropping, then it would make sense (and dubbing a perfectly good edge is something I've done all too often).  But I don't understand how/why it would happen with stones, unless it's simply due to burr formation.  I'm not disputing the claim, I simply don't understand the how/why.  If anyone has an explanation I'd love to hear it, and if it's something other than burr-formation, I've very, very curious, indeed.

Exclamation PLEASE READ: About Forum SPAM
Posted by: admin - 01-14-2018, 12:43 AM - Forum: Relevant General Discussion - Replies (1)

We do our best to keep the BESS Exchange free of spam and spammers, but occasionally a spammer manages to post spam on the Exchange.  Rest assured that we will remove the spam post and ban the spammer as soon as possible.

Best advice:  When you see a spam post about supplements, Russian beach towels, enlarge your whatever, or some other obvious crap not related to the Exchange, simply don't open the post. The spammers want you to read it, so just resist the urge and don't.

This is especially true if the spammer posts a web link.  DO NOT CLICK THE LINK!  Links posted by spammers can be phishing or a malicious browser attack subjecting your computer to a security breach. It is also good general advice that if you receive an email from an unknown or not trusted source that contains a web link, don't click the link and never give out personal information. Clicking links and providing personal information is the most common way people get into trouble.

Please feel free to PM admin, or email admin@bessex.com if you have any questions or concerns.  We are always more than happy to be of assistance.

The alternative for a sharpening steel?
Posted by: Rupert Lucius - 01-13-2018, 09:25 PM - Forum: Relevant General Discussion - Replies (24)

Success with sharpening steels has been ZERO for me.

https://www.dick.de/en/tools-for-chefs-a...ning-steel

The  Mousetraps from Razor Edge has been around close to as long as I have:  https://www.razoredgesystems.com/

Also note their Mini Mousetrap.

What got me  thinking about "spring loaded steels" was this article sent to me by Mr. Max - take note at  8 minutes and 18 seconds:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwW89H1ol...e=youtu.be

Have you had experience with spring loaded steels?

  Metalworking fluid for CBN wheels
Posted by: KnifeGrinders - 01-13-2018, 07:00 PM - Forum: Relevant General Discussion - Replies (10)

Since woodturnerswonders.com had voided warranty for use of its CBN wheels with water, I've been looking for a substitute, and finally found a metalworking fluid that doesn't turn milky and remains transparent so that the edge and burr can be watched while grinding (I use CBN wheels with Tormek).

It is Metallium XDP2000
made in Australia by Excision

I bought 1L for myself from https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/S090A but it is also available on eBay.
