this story starts off on dec. 16th while i am working the whole foods complimentary knife sharpening gig.
young navy guys walks up and wants to know if i can move the bevel up about 1/2" or more to thin his knife for better edge. he says he in in no rush.......i have sharpened some pocket knives before for him, so i take it home and work on it about 40 mins each time, that is 2 times.
it is HARD..... i make no progress hardly so i decide to call my knife making guru buddy in SD......many of you know him well and ask if would consider a small project of this sort.
the rest is HISTORY......before pics......right off the grinder pics and right out of the box in va. pics.
cost for project:............try zero............thats what friends do for friends in 2018.....before and after.
thank you very much mr mark

No surprise to us Max but thanks for sharing. Mark Reich's skill and knowledge with knives and knife making is only exceeded by his generosity and his willingness to go the extra mile for his friends.

You are most welcome, of course, my friend. Yes, the steel was just too hard for a Kally.
Just to explain, I took the middle pictures straight off the grinder just to comfort the Navy guy. I wanted to make sure he knew I didn't touch the edge until I sharpened on an Atoma plate.
Thanks for taking pics of the end result, Max. They are good ones!
I always forget to take pictures...

I’m not surprised either. Mr. Mark, you make beautiful knives! I wish Photobucket had not stolen the pics you had. There was one knife you made that, if memory serves correctly, was lying on a stump. It was gorgeous! It looked as though nature itself grew it. A work of art. I would truly like to see it again.
How did you grind that blade? Very nice hollow grind. On a wheel of a belt grinder? Opposing wheel belt grinder? Grinding wheel? I wish I could have watched.

Thank You, Sir. Knives and stumps are usually a good combination, so I probably have well over 1K. Any specifics would help narrow the field.
I finally ponied up for a very nice computer. I was able to combine both of my old computers to one, and I think I have most of my pictures. Recent development, so I'm not sure, but I definitely need to figure it out.
Mr. Grepper, what do you suggest I use to manage and share pictures?
After thorough testing of every sort of all bevel profiles, flat grind is usually the best combination of strength to cutting performance, given adequate material proportions, so I ground the bevels on the ceramic platen of a TW-90.
It's often difficult to make the distinction from pictures, but bevel height is something to consider.
This would have made a great video, because grinding hardened steel makes a shower of sparks, even with stainless. Grinding hard is common for production. It just takes good equipment and care. Experienced guys do it all the time.
Take Krein for instance. Every blade he's ever ground is hardened, and I've never seen anything but high praise. Think of his clientele- knife knuts to the man. No complaints.

Short of using a CNC mill Mark I don't know how you did such a precise job on that long intersecting bevel. So how did you do it? Or are you going to have to kill me after you tell me?

What a beautiful knife after your intervention, Mr. Mark!
You have breathed a new life into the old knife and shown refined sense of style and elegance. Congrats.
Max, thanks for sharing!

What is that strange little knife with a thick blade and stubby handle used for anyway?
