0g Score Possible?
#1
A knife sharpening outfit called Burrbenders has several videos out showing a BESS score of ZERO, and others with scores <5g.  Is this even possible, assuming the test media is real and the test is being done correctly?  In the video the guy doing the test isn't using the fulcrum, and he's moving too quickly, but even then, a 0 score is mind boggling.

That's a cute and fun video that demonstrates how easy post production video editing is these days. Just because it's on the 'Net and it's a video does not make it true. Well, except for the dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park movie. After all, those are in a video so they must be real and we all hope they don't escape!

The PT50A is an extremely accurate lab instrument with a 1g display resolution, reads pressure many times/second and rounds up at 0.5g pressure. How much is 1g? Open your hand and drop a $1.00 paper bill on it. That's about 1g. Think... The video attempts to show the knife severing the test media at less than 1/2 gram, less than half the weight of a $1.00 bill. Really? To me, that makes no sense.

You are correct 3D Anvil, “0 score is mind boggling”.

In all seriousness, the poster of the original video appears to be a reputable sharpening outfit that no doubt produces some fine edges. I suspect the video is sort of an inside joke for those into sharpening. A lot like a car detailing shop showing a video of customers in sunglasses looking at a car they polished saying that sunglasses were required to prevent blindness as the car was so shiny!

Please don’t get me wrong. If anyone has questions about why I think a 0g sharpness reading on a PT50A makes no sense, just post. I’ll be happy to go into it.

I watched the original video, but now when I click the link it wants an Instagram or Facebook login. I don't have and don't want either, so I can no longer check out the video.

Quite the video you sent along, 3D Anvil, and thank you for the effort in doing so! We can offer the following in an effort to help you with your question:

Edges cleaved from obsidian glass produce the sharpest edges (at least to the extent of our awareness).  Obsidian glass material is capable of producing edges many times sharper than any edge composed of steel

They say that an expertly cleaved obsidian cutting edge can have a total thickness of only 4 nanometers. Assuming a properly conducted sharpness test and, if said obsidian was subjected to that sharpness test, such an obsidian edge would then produce a theoretical BESS test result of 2 (total thickness = 4, radius of edge = 2 nanometers). Apparently, the obsidian scalpels we tested some time ago weren't as expertly cleaved because they ran BESS 3 - 5.

With consideration for the above, we feel your "bogglement",
