Why don't use CBN wheel for knife sharpening?

Woodturners sharpen their tools with bench grinder & 8" CBN wheel.(RPM is 1750 or 3400) But I can't find anybody who use CBN wheel for knife sharpening at high speed. Do you know why?

I use Tormek, Paper wheel, and belt sharpener. My belt sharpener doesn't have abrasive wheel.

Visit the Tormek forum and search for CBN wheels.  Tormek folks are using and have been for years CBN wheels with success.  They are extremely durable, don’t dish, require constant refreshing with the stone grader to maintain a constant abrasive level, or regrinding to maintain flatness.  That said, they are not variable grit level like the standard Tormek SB wheel is.

You might PM Mr. Ken and ask if he will post about knife sharpening with CBN wheels.  I know he has some of those wheels and has sharpened knives with them.

I think Mr. KG also has CBN wheels for the Tormek.

I too have wondered why there are no CBN belts for belt grinders.  Mr. Mike actually discussed this with a belt manufacturer and I suspect that he will reply when he sees this post

I know the CBN wheels for Tormek and I have it. But it runs slowly. I wondering why CBN wheel(8")s is not used for knife sharepning at high speed. As you know, CBN wheel generates low heat, has long lifespan, and makes excellent edge.

I don't see why it wouldn't work, but it may be pretty aggressive on a high speed grinder.  It would probably work better with and adjustable speed bench grinder that could be slowed. Additionally a device like the Tormek bench grinder attachment would be needed to maintain a bevel angle.  

For whatever reason I don't see a lot about it on-line.  I imagine that if you search around a bit you will be able to answer your question.  Interesting idea and question though.  Maybe someone who has tried it or who knows will post.

I have used CBN to sharpen a knife. When I was testing CBN wheels for the Tormek forum, I tried the 80 grit CBN wheel (used with water and Honerite Gold) with an inexpensive chef's knife. After grinding, I used the leather honing wheel for a longer than usual time. It produced a very adequate edge.

The most used CBN grits, 80 and 180, are really designed for woodturners using high speed steel tools and high speed dry grinders. Using CBN or diamond wheels for knife sharpening is more recent. It also seems to be a much smaller market for wheel vendors.

I believe most of the bessex knife sharpeners use belt grinders, although there are Tormek sharpeners like me here as well.

I do not think now is a good time to purchase extra grinding wheels for a Tormek. The grinding wheel technology is changing. 

Tormek has just shipped its first batch of the new 250mm diamond wheels. These three diamond wheels are actually the second generation diamond wheels for Tormek. The first generation, the DWF-200 600 grit and the DWC-200 360 grit are still in production and designated solely for the T2, although both work with the T4. They are designed to only work dry. In addition to working wet, the new diamond wheels have abrasive on the outer side of the wheel, making flat grinding practical.

To date, Tormek has not issued any in depth support material, print or video for the diamond wheels.

Using CBN wheels with the Tormek is an after thought with the vendors. The steel reducing bushings work very well, however, they are not stainless and can rust easily. None of them is primarily designed for the Tormek. We are seeing progress. We should have more user reports by the end of the year.
