In my experience, the EDOF feature works well, as one can configure the number of exposures (and thus DoF) to be captured. 

The EDR is less sophisticated, and always captures 3 exposures whose difference from nominal exposure cannot be configured. For specular subjects like knife edges, the automatic exposure range is not always sufficient.
