Hey friends,
Spoke with Penn State Industries today. My 110 volt motor on my Viel 1X42 burned out the other day. The 12 volt mini lathe motor is out of stock until mid February. I’ve been wanting to upgrade to one of these for awhile now. Now my main belt sander is out of commission. Does anyone know if another supplier sells these motor kits? Or maybe someone has one of these kits that they would sell me? Anyway, let me know if y’all can help.
Sharpco, as I recall, you are presently using a fixed speed motor in your Viel. If, by chance, your motor should burn out, possible, but not very likely, replacement fixed speed motors are very readily available. If necessary, you should be able to quickly replace your motor.
For the record, the 1/4hp fixed speed motor I purchased from Viel shorted out during my conversion process. I have no idea whether the failure was due to something I might have done or a problem in the motor itself.
Apparently Penn State being out of stock with the variable speed motors is not uncommon. Patience is required.

Hello, I'm sorry to learn this about your Viel motor and it makes me a little nervous about mine. For some time I've been very intrigued by a certain industrial sewing machine motor that is currently being used by AMK Tactical (they manufacturer a 1" X 30" knife sharpening machine). This is a variable speed, brushless ¾ hp motor that is reversable. Go to this site to see their sharpening machine and video: http://amktactical.com/AMK-75-1x30-Knife-Sharpener
I located one source for this motor in Baton Rouge, LA. Go here for details:
For the record I have nothing to do with AMK or Allbrands in Louisiana. I'm merely considering this motor as a possible replacement on my knife sharpening machine which is similar to the AMK. Originally, it was a 1" X 30" machine that I converted to 1" X 42" so I could use the same belts as my Viel.
Although some modification would be necessary to attach this motor to a Viel, I hope above information might be interesting to you.

I'm not sure that I can immediately get a Viel-mountable motor in South Korea. And it is possible the other part of Viel will cause problem.
With the other motor, try to make sure that it is of a compatable size for the Viel. As I recall, the Viel is designed for NEMA 44 motors. (I planned to use motors I already had. They were all too large.)
