HELP NEEDED

picked up 9 Henckel steak knives......was 12.  lady threw 3 away after handles fell off.

story is:  bought from williams-sonoma few years back and was told dishwasher safe..........you can see the caustic soap has eaten away a lot of the material.......whatever the material.

i do not / have not do much handle work, so i am asking the best way to replace with new and how??.

my connection at williams-sonoma does has a call into their henckel rep.......maybe they will replace / maybe not.

please advise

Max, the handles seems to be quite OK only the rivets are eroded. You can replace them with new ones but drilling through the tongue may be challenging. Special drill and countersink is recommended for properly installing the new ones.

I have noticed that the knives are overgrinded in the middle. Are the customers satisfied with it? Undecided

That's something I've never seen or heard of. Good German knives like those are constantly run through dishwashers. 

What does she use for detergent? How old are they?

It looks like a batch of bad batch of rivets to me, but I can't find corroborating evidence of any kind.  

I know you know what corrosive degradation of the edge looks like. Is that why they are so over-ground?

I would definitely expect them to replace the knives.

scales are fine.......just the rivets are going.............i did not sharpen, just picked up to repair rivets if i can.

age unknown........over ground.......just the way i picked them up yesterday........no sharpening, just wants handles to stay on.

You might be able to find rivets or chicago screws at Tandy, but the scales should Definitely be attached with epoxy or Loctite 324 or 330.

Can't allow blood or anything between the scales and tang.

Seems to me like she's already decided they are disposable at this point.

after this post, i posted on my twitter page and heckle rep. from UK respond with contact info. for USA store in NY, i packaged up and sent with a note.
