Viel upgrade

I like the idea too, Ken. Even though my Viel wouldn't care, Garry's mod is solid.

I'm sure anything that tightens the tolerances, like tape, would work fine, but with the pictures Garry provided it's such an easy way to tighten things up professionally and permanently that I would definitely make it standard if I were running a string of Viels. I hope Mr. Steve B takes it into consideration.

Incidentally, Garry had a hell of a time keeping his belts running true, so I commend him on fixing his properly.

Rupert has done a number of conversions. He mentioned that he had to shim (only) one. Removing the drive pulley and loosening the motor a bit to install a shim is no big deal. When reassembled with the shim, check to see if it runs better or worse (or the same). Adjust accordingly. Once you get it tuned, it should remain in tune. I suppose belt grinders are like homo sapiens, all the same species, but not identical.

ps Many years ago, I shopped for a Steinway grand piano. I was surprised with the difference in tone and touch of same model pianos. If Steinways vary, why shouldn’t Viels?
