Order of hardening and sharpening - grepper - 12-15-2017 I'm pretty clueless about knife making, so a simple question: When making a knife, is the final sharpening done before or after hardening? RE: Order of hardening and sharpening - wadebevan - 12-16-2017 There are a lot more qualified people than I on this subject, but, in my experience and my reading on the subject, I leave about .030" on 'edge' side of the blade to be removed and sharpened after HT. HT likes to warp thin material, and I had this happen on a test HT for a small blade. RE: Order of hardening and sharpening - scott.livesey - 12-16-2017 final sharpening is done after hardening and tempering. with thin stock, 1/16" or less, I oil quench to black then put between plates in a vise till a room temperature which helps prevent warping. RE: Order of hardening and sharpening - Mark Reich - 12-18-2017 Succinctly, sharpening is the final step before boxing for delivery. Before that, the sheath is fitted. Before that, you haft the blade. Before that, the blade is heat treated. I only skipped about 50 steps. |
