Good thoughts, Jeremy. Using a tachometer to determine rpm (revolutions per minute) and sfm (surface feet per minute, or equivalent metric unit) will build on the scientific basis typified by using BESS. I think that is a commendable way to advance.

While I appreciate a more scientific approach, on a day to day basis I will probably revert to my touchy feely side and use whatever speed range feels comfortable. Using the Viel at slower speed reminded me of the control I value so much with the Tormek.

I will post readings as soon as I run the test.

Still trying to eliminate and isolate the problem, but I'm finding that slow speed on some Trizacts are giving some inconsistency. It's really small and only noticeable with a bright light while sharpening and even harder to see under magnification. Nothing to see or feel while cutting.

Seems a little like belt chatter at the seam or a worn outer edge of the belt.

I don't think pressure or speed of the blades contacting with the belt are it. I've used old belts and brand new belts. Never had this issue on my 2"x72".

My next attempt to eliminate will be adding a shim under the spring inside the Viel.

Please share any thoughts or experiences.

Good thought, Jeremy. If you tighten the belt, say by placing a quarter or two between the spring and the shaft, does the problem lessen, worsen or stay the same?
