RE: Viel-- variable speed or slower speed? - Ken S - 05-10-2017 [attachment=181][attachment=182] Here are the two photos showing how I mounted the PSI motor bracket onto the Viel frame. Ken RE: Viel-- variable speed or slower speed? - Ken S - 05-11-2017 Update: I am in a holding pattern. I purchased the variable speed motor from Penn State Industries. I have mounted the motor bracket in my Viel frame (as in the photos). The motor and control unit are at a local electric motor shop. The motor is having the shaft diameter reduced to half inch to match the Viel pulley, and maybe some removed from the armature. The control is getting a reversible switch. All this should be completed by next week. At that point, I will attach the motor and rig up a way to hold the motor control on the Viel. I should be back in business. I will post more at that time. RE: Viel-- variable speed or slower speed? - Ken S - 05-12-2017 Max, I debated between resizing the pulley or the shaft and decided on the shaft. My motor and control unit are presently at the motor repair shop. In hindsight, resizing the pulley would have probably been easier. The idea of a reversing switch is a carry over from using my Tormek. I often use it with the edge trailing. This may prove to be another of my ideas in the "possible, but not practical" category. Thanks for posting the helpful photos. I haven't worked much with aluminum plate. Does it bend easily for the ninety degree bends? I had thought to use Baltic birch plywood. Is heat a consideration? Ken RE: Viel-- variable speed or slower speed? - grepper - 05-12-2017 Does the Viel sharpen into the edge? RE: Viel-- variable speed or slower speed? - Ken S - 05-12-2017 Generally yes. The two exceptions are I know of are chisels with the Viel jig and carving tools when sharpened on a Viel rewired by the vendor to run in the opposite direction. Ken RE: Viel-- variable speed or slower speed? - grepper - 05-12-2017 You know, belts are somewhat different than a stone. I’m sure that many will disagree, but sharpening into a belt gives me the creeps. If the belt grabs the edge, it could cause regrets, or even possibly epidermal leakage. Of course you would never, ever, use a leather, felt or other soft belt into the edge. So, I think your reversible motor is a good thing. RE: Viel-- variable speed or slower speed? - Ken S - 05-12-2017 Grepper, I really can't answer your question. My experience with the Viel is limited to operations like grinding down bolsters, eliminating low spots (swales) in the contour of chef's knives and misc. tasks. This forum, specifically Maxtheknife's videos, have inspired me to attempt more with my Viel. Ken RE: Viel-- variable speed or slower speed? - Ken S - 05-18-2017 ¡Progress! The customed machined adaptor to use the Wolff Ergo holder with the Viel scissors jig arrived today. (Machined by James Hammons of Ace Sharpening in Kansas City; referred to me by Maxtheknife.) My motor shaft has been machined down to .5". The motor with the new reversible switch should be ready tomorrow morning. I have mounted the bracket for the motor on the Viel frame. Mounting the motor should be a five minute project. I will operate the Viel with the motor control unmounted for a while in order to determine how I want to mount it. I may try to incorporate a carrying handle. The digital laser tachometer I ordered at Grepper's suggestion should be delivered tomorrow. I hope to be up and running this weekend! Stay tuned. Ken RE: Viel-- variable speed or slower speed? - grepper - 05-18-2017 I'd be interested in seeing some pics with the scissors jig, and what you find is a good rpm for scissors. So, the arm for the scissors jig is the standard Twice as Sharp, but you have a custom holder piece for the scissors? Is that what is going on? |
