That, is absolutely beautiful Mark! 2xthumbsup   It's soooo easy on the eyes!  It almost looks as if nature grew it.

Is that layered steel?  If not, how did you get that finish?

What a picture - one beautiful knife.

Not only a beauty - having worn your neck knives for over four years, knowing the easy that they sharpen and their ability to hold an edge, without any sharpening, no touch ups my first knife with your forged  52100 steel has  dressed 3 deer and is waiting for our next deer season.

Only wish that we would have known about Edge On Up sharpness testers and kept records after each kill and dressing - OH! WELL.

Will ask my son Henry to test the sharpness of the said 52100 and will report back within the next week or so.  Henry has my? (our) knife and Edge On Up.

For sure Mr. Ed Fowler,  Murray Carter and other master are proud for you and your success.

Rupert

Thank you! Thank you!

Sorry, I should have given more information. I was just happy to get a picture posted last night.  Angel

The handle is mammoth ivory, and the bolster is petrified mammoth tooth. There's a nice little dovetailed brass spacer between the two.

I will be explaining everything regarding my knives, but it will take some time. I promise, this forum will know more about me and my knives than anyone else.

Grepper, the line you're seeing is actually a hardening line, but almost everyone thinks it's a lamination line. It comes from heating the lower half of the blade with an O/A torch and a big welding tip. I bring that steel up to the right temperature and quench the blade.

That makes the edge much harder than the spine. In order to accentuate this feature, I etch the blade in a mild acid. The acid is able to dissolve the soft steel faster than the hard steel, so the hardening line becomes a visible as well as tactile demarcation line.

The reason the line is so sharp is a function of steel. The difference between hardened steel and unhardened steel is an exact temperature. A degree too cool, and the grains of steel will not convert to martensite, or hardened steel.

What you see above that line are my hammer tracks from forging the steel by hand. If you can forge true enough to hammer out a perfectly straight blade, people like you more.  Big Grin

Thank you so much for the kind words, Mr. Rupert!

Mark, you are a true artist and craftsman.  I love that knife!

If you would like to gift it to me, I will gladly accept.

Mark I know that you've been holding out on us. You have to have something cooking in that new forge of yours by now. Let's hear about it!

Mr. Mark, do you have any idea what knife you pictured in the first post in this thread?  If so, could you repost?  We are a victim of the dastardly and opprobrious Photobucket.

Grepper,

I appreciate the plainspoken and direct manner of your posts! Smile

I wouldn't have remembered, but by my my description I know which knife this is.

Can you guys take a picture with your phone and post it without going through a photo hosting site? Is it a matter of resizing the picture, and if so, how the heck do I do that??

I wish I could get this figured out. I always want to add photos, but feel stymied.

I'm so disgusted with photobucket I could rend my garments.
